about
This track is an original composition based on the text of Psalm 22. Appalachian Psalter is a project dedicated to responding with new music to all 150 Psalms. Psalm 22 was the first song/hymn written, before the project itself had been conceived. It is a song of somber hope, of tempered joy. The pain the speaker of the Psalm feels in unbearable, and Jesus himself quoted this Psalm when on the cross - yet the hope still present is humbling and haunting.
lyrics
My soul is draining water; my bones are out of joint.
My heart of wax is waning; my hands shall disappoint.
Oh, my Lord, come quickly, both Lion and the Lamb!
God of just decision, in humble frame of man.
(Refrain:)
From you comes my theme, all voices shall sing,
the bridegroom and the vow.
The poor shall now eat, no famine defeats
the feast His flesh allows.
I have no other good.
I have no other good.
For men and dogs surround me; I tremble on the ground.
I breathe the dust of dying and silence fills my mouth.
Oh, my Lord, come quickly, our standard for our sake!
God both high and lowly, to open back the gate.
(Refrain)
Cursed by all before me, a worm and not a man.
Mocked by earthly justice and scorned for who I am.
Oh, my Lord, come quickly, erase this earthly name!
For you have not forgotten and wasted not a day.
(Refrain)
